[00:05:08] So for people who don't know you

[00:05:09] Could you give us a quick sort of potted history

[00:05:11] Into you and your background and how you got into music

[00:05:15] Yeah doing the quick version

[00:05:18] Very much classical training

[00:05:20] Growing up and did some jazz in the teens as well

[00:05:24] And when you reach adulthood

[00:05:28] It's like what the heck am I going to do

[00:05:29] So pop out into the world being a composer

[00:05:32] And that's how I started

[00:05:34] And back many years ago

[00:05:36] Almost a romantic vision of nice manuscripts

[00:05:40] And a bit of paper, you know pen and right away

[00:05:43] But yeah then you just learn about technology

[00:05:46] That was available

[00:05:47] Getting into studios

[00:05:48] Learning that

[00:05:49] Learning the basics approach

[00:05:53] And as a composer doing a lot of production music

[00:05:56] You've got to learn to mix of course

[00:05:58] And I had a publisher

[00:06:01] I started back then

[00:06:03] And it was about the year 2000

[00:06:06] When I was asked by them to say

[00:06:08] Could you master this production album?

[00:06:10] And it's like yes you can

[00:06:12] Is always the answer

[00:06:13] So that's how I got into mastering

[00:06:16] And sound on sound became very useful at that

[00:06:20] To just really double down of

[00:06:23] What were the specifics that were different

[00:06:25] I mean it's sort of a

[00:06:29] Less controlled mixing

[00:06:31] In that sense

[00:06:31] You're using similar techniques

[00:06:33] So yeah about two years of doing that

[00:06:38] About an album a month probably

[00:06:40] I was doing

[00:06:42] And now I'm here

[00:06:43] And it's just that journey of

[00:06:46] You know how your life changes directions

[00:06:50] And I didn't know I'd be doing this now

[00:06:53] When I started what I was doing

[00:06:55] So you actually came from a background of composing

[00:06:58] Is that the sort of

[00:06:59] Is that the journey for you?

[00:07:02] It was very much you started with composing

[00:07:03] And was that for

[00:07:04] Was that composing

[00:07:06] Just music in general?

[00:07:07] So I don't mean that

[00:07:08] Literally

[00:07:09] I mean was that for sort of

[00:07:10] You know quartets and orchestras

[00:07:11] And that sort of thing

[00:07:12] Or was that always

[00:07:13] Looking at film or television

[00:07:15] Or

[00:07:16] How did your composing

[00:07:17] Sort of

[00:07:18] I generally can't remember that

[00:07:19] Or that far back

[00:07:21] Now what was the actual thing

[00:07:22] But it was

[00:07:23] A direction of whoever I was talking with

[00:07:25] At the time

[00:07:26] Went oh yes this thing called

[00:07:27] Production music

[00:07:28] And back then when you were looking

[00:07:30] At production music

[00:07:30] You were often thinking of it

[00:07:32] As your pension

[00:07:32] And how people could earn

[00:07:35] A lot of money

[00:07:35] Off that

[00:07:38] So

[00:07:38] Yeah that was just my direction

[00:07:40] And it literally was doing anything

[00:07:42] From a

[00:07:43] A kid's album

[00:07:44] To a full orchestral

[00:07:47] Dance tracks

[00:07:49] Did a

[00:07:50] Salsa album

[00:07:51] I think at one point

[00:07:53] You know

[00:07:53] Just variety in there

[00:07:55] And

[00:07:56] That's what I like about

[00:07:57] What I do now

[00:07:57] I suppose

[00:07:58] I get to work with

[00:08:00] Particularly composers

[00:08:00] Because that's where I started

[00:08:02] So about 90% of my work

[00:08:04] Comes via composers

[00:08:06] And

[00:08:07] Particularly for

[00:08:08] Film and TV

[00:08:09] You never know

[00:08:10] What you're going to get

[00:08:11] Could be all sorts of styles

[00:08:14] You know

[00:08:14] It's always lovely to get that

[00:08:16] Big

[00:08:16] Live orchestral recording

[00:08:18] But then some can be really

[00:08:20] Dark and dirty

[00:08:22] And synthy

[00:08:22] And

[00:08:24] Yeah

[00:08:24] Variety

[00:08:25] When you're

[00:08:27] Sorry

[00:08:28] When you're producing

[00:08:29] Film

[00:08:30] Like music for film

[00:08:32] Are you working with

[00:08:33] The composer and the director

[00:08:35] When you're producing it

[00:08:36] Like

[00:08:37] Do you guys look at the film itself

[00:08:38] And think

[00:08:39] Well we need some

[00:08:40] Does the

[00:08:42] I don't know

[00:08:42] That just seems like

[00:08:43] Syncing up with the film

[00:08:44] And the director

[00:08:45] And all that

[00:08:46] That seems so complicated

[00:08:48] My experience so far

[00:08:50] I'm not

[00:08:50] Doing the dub mix

[00:08:52] I'm purely working

[00:08:53] On the music

[00:08:53] So

[00:08:54] I'm generally

[00:08:56] Working directly

[00:08:56] With the composer

[00:08:57] And

[00:08:58] It's about making

[00:08:59] Their music

[00:08:59] Sound as good

[00:09:00] As possible

[00:09:01] And very often

[00:09:04] Depending on

[00:09:05] Their skill set

[00:09:06] They've done

[00:09:07] All their work

[00:09:08] And then

[00:09:08] I'm coming in

[00:09:09] And so

[00:09:09] What can I improve

[00:09:10] How can I lift it

[00:09:12] I mean certainly

[00:09:14] I was working with a composer

[00:09:15] Joe Costellis

[00:09:16] This week

[00:09:17] And doing

[00:09:18] Two days of online

[00:09:19] Mixing with her

[00:09:20] And it's just like

[00:09:22] What can we delve into

[00:09:23] And there's things

[00:09:24] That as a composer

[00:09:25] You're just throwing stuff

[00:09:26] Out as quickly

[00:09:27] As possible

[00:09:28] They're under so much pressure

[00:09:29] And

[00:09:30] We actually grabbed

[00:09:32] The UAD

[00:09:34] Pre-plugin

[00:09:35] Century channel strip

[00:09:36] That's been out

[00:09:37] At the moment

[00:09:37] And we were probably

[00:09:38] Using that

[00:09:39] Several times

[00:09:40] On

[00:09:40] Each cue

[00:09:41] And

[00:09:42] Just

[00:09:43] Even putting

[00:09:44] The mic

[00:09:45] Switch on

[00:09:47] So it was adding

[00:09:47] Distortion

[00:09:48] Because it was quite a

[00:09:49] Dark

[00:09:49] Dirty score

[00:09:50] At certain times

[00:09:51] Playing with that

[00:09:52] Very useful tool

[00:09:55] But no

[00:09:56] It's about

[00:09:56] Communicating with them

[00:09:57] I don't have

[00:09:58] The

[00:09:59] Communication with the

[00:10:00] Director side of things

[00:10:03] That's really interesting

[00:10:04] I think the whole

[00:10:05] It's something that we

[00:10:06] Haven't spoken to anyone

[00:10:07] About is that

[00:10:08] Whole

[00:10:09] How music in film

[00:10:11] Happens

[00:10:11] How it

[00:10:12] How it works

[00:10:13] We all

[00:10:13] We all sit there

[00:10:14] And

[00:10:14] I mean I can think of

[00:10:15] We obviously pick out

[00:10:17] Songs that we hear in films

[00:10:18] And that's

[00:10:19] Great

[00:10:20] But

[00:10:20] The actual music in films

[00:10:21] I think

[00:10:22] The three of us

[00:10:23] Have no real understanding

[00:10:24] Of how that comes about

[00:10:25] And

[00:10:26] We see the

[00:10:27] Fancy videos of

[00:10:29] Everybody in Abbey Road

[00:10:29] Studio

[00:10:30] With the big

[00:10:30] With the film

[00:10:32] Playing

[00:10:32] And the orchestra

[00:10:33] Recording

[00:10:34] But I'm guessing

[00:10:35] That is not most

[00:10:37] That's not most

[00:10:38] Music for

[00:10:40] Broadcast

[00:10:40] Because that's kind of

[00:10:41] What I was thinking

[00:10:42] I was like

[00:10:43] Yeah okay so

[00:10:43] You've got the director there

[00:10:44] You've got the

[00:10:45] Composer there

[00:10:46] They're all just

[00:10:47] With the film

[00:10:48] Being

[00:10:48] Like

[00:11:09] It just sort of

[00:11:10] Seems to be ramping up

[00:11:11] And particularly when

[00:11:12] I can just dive into

[00:11:13] An online session

[00:11:15] As well

[00:11:15] And control their computer

[00:11:17] But then having said that

[00:11:18] I'm just mixing

[00:11:20] A Sky documentary

[00:11:22] For a composer

[00:11:23] It's going to be done

[00:11:24] By Tuesday

[00:11:24] So it's like

[00:11:25] I've got several days

[00:11:26] And I can just

[00:11:28] Throw that in

[00:11:28] He's sending me

[00:11:29] All the files in Dropbox

[00:11:30] So that's a disconnected

[00:11:33] Fairly similar

[00:11:36] Template

[00:11:36] In terms of

[00:11:37] Instrumentations

[00:11:38] And groups

[00:11:38] So that I'm checking

[00:11:40] Improving

[00:11:41] And then

[00:11:42] That will go over

[00:11:45] And then the dub mixer

[00:11:46] Is going to do

[00:12:01] Because it's just

[00:12:02] Buried up

[00:12:03] Like oh

[00:12:06] I think it's very frustrating

[00:12:08] It must be for a composer

[00:12:09] Because they put

[00:12:10] So much work in

[00:12:12] In such a

[00:12:13] Quick space of time

[00:12:15] Under so much pressure

[00:12:16] And then sometimes

[00:12:18] You can hardly hear the music

[00:12:20] So on those topics

[00:12:22] I'm loving this

[00:12:22] Because this is something

[00:12:23] I know nothing about

[00:12:24] I find this absolutely fascinating

[00:12:25] So when you're

[00:12:27] So when you've received

[00:12:28] You said you were mixing

[00:12:29] For obviously

[00:12:30] You don't have to tell us

[00:12:30] Anything confidential

[00:12:31] But what do you

[00:12:32] What do you

[00:12:33] What typically do you get

[00:12:34] From those

[00:12:35] In those mixes

[00:12:36] Is it

[00:12:37] Very much

[00:12:38] You get each string

[00:12:39] Part

[00:12:40] On a separate track

[00:12:41] Is it like a normal

[00:12:42] I'd call it normal

[00:12:43] Sort of recording studio session

[00:12:45] Where you have a track

[00:12:46] Per instrument

[00:12:47] And you do a full mix

[00:12:48] From there

[00:12:49] Or do you tend to get

[00:12:51] Of these are the strings

[00:12:53] These are the

[00:12:54] Sort of brass section

[00:12:56] How

[00:12:56] What is it you typically get

[00:12:58] When you're doing this?
